Overview
Heroic epic sung for a thousand years, telling the story of Khan Jangar leading warriors to defend their homeland. An important oral literature heritage of the Mongolian people.
Historical Origins
The Jangar Epic emerged from the Oirat Mongolian communities, with roots tracing back to the 15th century. It reflects the historical struggles and aspirations of western Mongolian tribes.
Artistic Features
The epic consists of 12 major chapters, each telling a separate heroic story. It features rich imagery, vivid character portrayals, and elaborate battle scenes. The narrative structure combines prose and verse.
Current Status
Preserved through dedicated Jangarchi (epic singers) in Xinjiang's Bayingolin and Bortala regions. Academic research and digital documentation projects are ongoing.
